Finding the Right Automatic Espresso Machines

With all of the many choices that you have for espresso machines, it can be difficult to make a decision on which one to buy. You have three  main types of espresso machines: automatic, semi-automatic, and manual. The manual versions are more of the antique, but functional, espresso machines. The semi-automatics can be good choices, but a lot of people choose the automatic espresso machines, especially for home purchases. What sets the automatic espresso machines apart from the rest? Let's go over the basics of an automatic espresso machine so that you can see why it is such a popular selection.

First and foremost, the automatic espresso is automatic. These espresso machines are also known in the industry as the pump driven espresso machines. Automatic espresso machines do not require the physical force that semi-automatic and manual machines require to brew the espresso. Instead, there is a pump that is powered by a motor.

Another difference is the method of heating. Commercial automatic espresso machines are usually tied into the plumbing at the location to provide water. Consumer versions have a reservoir tank like a regular coffee maker. Whatever the means for water supply, the water is heated for brewing and boiling water for the steamed milk.

In automatic espresso machines, the method of heating the water can differ from model to model. There are some models that will have one chamber that heats the water for both the brewing and the steamed milk. Other models will use the chamber specifically for steam production and a consistent flow of water is sent to the heat exchanger that uses heat from the steam for brewing and the steam itself for steaming the milk.

In automatic espresso machines, you will find that they can do so much more than just making espresso. Most automatic espresso machine models will also grind the coffee beans. The benefit is that the espresso has a more freshly made taste, because the freshly ground coffee beans have not lost any flavor from sitting exposed to air. Stale coffee does not make a good espresso.

There are also automated espresso machines that are known as super-automatic espresso machines. These espresso machines will perform the same functions as a normal automatic espresso machine, with the addition of some other beneficial features. The super-automatic espresso maker grinds the coffee, tampers it, and extracts it. These forms of automatic espresso makers leave little operating responsibilities for people, especially when the espresso machine is attached to a direct water line. There are also models available the will automatically froth the milk and automatically dispense the espresso and froth when completed. Most super-automatic espresso machines are used in commercial applications, mainly because they produce a finished cup of espresso in under a minute.

Automatic espresso machines are the way to go for people who have a limited amount of time, or simply do not want to have to put all that effort into making the espresso that is required from other types of espresso makers. Most of the automatic and super-automatic espresso machines have one touch operation – you simply push the button and it goes through the cycle all on its own.
